Jesus has appeared to the disciples and commanded them to make disciples and that He will send them a comforter and a helper. The disciples are at the Lake of Galillee fishing all night, when Jesus from the shore aks them, if they caught any fish yet. He then tells them to cast their nets on the right side. They do it and their nets are so full they almost break. The disciple John recognizes the Lord and says so, but it is Peter, who zealously jumps into the water to greet Jesus. They have breakfast with Jesus on the shore and it is during this that Jesus turns to Peter and asks 3 times, “Peter do you love Me?” Peter hurt that he asks 3 times, answers Him each time, “Yes Lord, you know that I love you.”. Jesus 3 times tells Peter to “feed, tend, and shpherd His lambs/sheep”.
Jesus has one last life lesson in mercy, abiding, & obedience to teach the disciples, especially to Peter. Peter had betrayed Jesus 3 times on the night of His crucifixtion. Though Peter had repented and Jesus has told him to “fish for men” and that He will send a helper to accomplish the task, Peter and the disciples resorted to their old jobs of fishing for fish. But Jesus wanted Peter and the disciples to know that their past failures were forgiven and to finish the task He had given them, “Go and make disciples and teach them all that I commanded.” These are the life lessons Jesus taught His disciples and teaching us (all future disciples) … 1. “Abide in Me and you will bear much fruit for apart from Me you can do nothing.” They/we will not catch fish (men) without Jesus. Only by “walking by faith in God’s Spirit, truth, and love through Christ” can they/we accomplish the task God has given them/us to do. 2. ‘If you love Me, you will keep my commandments”. To please God, we must walk by faith in His Word. 3. “If you are my disciples, you will deny selk, take up the cross (complete your God given task), and follow Me.” He commands all of us to “follow Him” …be His disciple and make disciples. We are to be “Good Shepherds” of God’s flock.
Are we catching fish or men? Are we feeding, tending, and shepherding God’s flock, He has given each of us at home, work, school, church, etc..
“Lord, I want to… abide in You so that I will bear much fruit, walk by faith in your Spirit and your Word, and Your sheep that hears Your voice and follows You. In Jesus name!”
